The Startup MVP Scope Checklist: What to Build First

A founder's guide to scoping an MVP that validates your idea without overbuilding — essential features, nice-to-haves, and what to defer.

·6 min read

The biggest mistake startups make is building too much in v1. An MVP should validate your core hypothesis with the minimum feature set that delivers value.

Step 1: Define the Core Loop

What is the one action users must complete for your app to be useful? For a marketplace: list → discover → transact. For a ride-hailing app: request → match → ride. Everything else is secondary.

Step 2: Must-Have vs. Nice-to-Have

Must-haves: auth, core loop, basic profile, push notifications. Nice-to-haves: social sharing, advanced analytics, AI recommendations, multi-language. Defer nice-to-haves to v2.

Step 3: Set a Fixed Timeline

8–12 weeks is the sweet spot for most MVPs. If your scope needs 6 months, you're overbuilding. Cut features until it fits 12 weeks.

Step 4: Plan for Iteration

Launch with 80% polish on core features, not 100% polish on everything. Real user feedback beats perfect pre-launch assumptions.
